The Three Creeks Mitigation Bank is in Davidson County, approximately four miles south of Winston-Salem near the community of Midway and within the Yadkin River Basin. V2 has been working with the wonderful landowner family to implement this exciting project. Our mutual goal is to ensure that the farm stays within the family while allowing them to successfully continue raising cattle. Because the farm has been home to cattle for so long, the stream channels and wetlands in the project area have been impacted by decades of livestock and agricultural development. This project aims to protect 41.2 acres under a perpetual conservation easement that includes the restoration and enhancement of over 9,500 linear feet of stream across five stream channels. The project will also restore and enhance 6.4 acres of riparian wetlands in the Abbotts Creek watershed.
The restoration and protection of these streams and their riparian buffers will reduce nutrient input and improve denitrification by filtering runoff from the adjacent pasturelands through buffer areas. Fecal coliform will be decreased by excluding cattle from the wetland and streamside riparian zones, while providing alternative means of watering. The wetland restoration will include planting a variety of native hardwood trees and removing artificial hydrology drains. This will connect the streams and wetlands to the active floodplain and increase the time water remains on-site.
The project is currently under development and expected to be constructed in Fall 2024.
